La Sistine Chapellocated within the Vatican Museumsis one of the most famous works of art and architecture in the world. Commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV and built between 1477 and 1480, the chapel is renowned not only for its history but especially for its extraordinary frescoes, painted by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance.
The Sistine Chapel is a great rectangular roomIt is about 40.9 metres long, 13.4 metres wide and 20.7 metres high. Its architecture is simple and robust, with a series of rectangular windows along the upper walls providing diffuse natural light, ideal for illuminating the frescoes.
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is one of the most celebrated masterpieces of Western art. Composed of over 300 figures, the ceiling tells stories from the Old Testament, including the "Creation of Adam"one of the most iconic images in world art, depicting the moment when God gives birth to Adam.
Michelangelo's other great fresco is the 'Last Judgement"located on the wall behind the altar. Painted between 1536 and 1541, this fresco depicts the second coming of Christ and the final judgement of souls, with an impressive range of emotions and dynamic figures representing the blessed ascending to heaven and the damned descending to hell.
Before Michelangelo's intervention, the side walls of the Sistine Chapel were decorated with a series of frescoes by some of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance, including Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino and Cosimo Rosselli. These frescoes depict scenes from the life of Christ and Moses, and are arranged in three registers: the lower register with decorative drapes, the middle register with biblical stories, and the upper register with portraits of the Popes.
La Sistine Chapel is not only an artistic treasure, but also a place of great religious importance. It is here that the conclave, the assembly of cardinals that elects the new Pope, takes place. During the conclave, the cardinals gather under Michelangelo's frescoes, adding a further level of solemnity and historicity to this extraordinary place.
